Woodworking Project Ideas with White Oak

The uses for white oak, both flat sawn and quarter sawn, are many. The wood is robust and good looking, so it’s been used in fine furniture for centuries. Notably mission style and arts and crafts furniture of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Yet the wood is also one of the best domestic hardwoods for outdoor projects like patio furniture because it resists decay so well.

In fact, the USS Constitution, the world’s oldest navy vessel still afloat today, was built out of white oak. She earned the nickname Old Ironsides in a particular battle with a British ship during the War of 1812 in which enemy sailors noted how their cannonballs seemed to bounce right off of the hull of the Constitution, never once puncturing a hole. They said the ship must have been made of iron – but no, it was made of white oak.
